It was far too cold here for Eldred’s tastes. How the old Necromancer could live down in this Dungeon for an extended period of time eluded him. Didn’t he know that cold and damp was inductive to arthritis and respiratory illnesses? Especially for someone as old as the Necromancer was! Eldred had delivered to many Dungeons before, and none of them has been this poorly maintained.

He waddled down the dimly lit corridor, brown paper wrapped package in his hands. He held it awkwardly in front of him and supported it by his chin. He had been ordered to deliver these supplies hastily, while he didn’t know what was in the package, there was a raw metallic, meaty smell, like a prime beef steak, emanating from the parcel held right under his nose. It confirmed that it was far better that he just didn’t know!

Eldred mumbled to himself, glancing down occasionally at the map he had scrawled onto the top of the brown box.

Suddenly one of the chambers he passed washed a blast of pleasant heat over him as he moved by the open door. He stopped and cautiously peeked inside. There was an opulent chamber with a plush armchair, roaring log fire and glowing bottle of ruby red wine set on an oaken side table. What a perfect little den. Warm too! Eldred’s toes felt like numb shards of ice.

He licked his lips and glanced around looking for any sign of company. He was really alone… A little sit down to rest his poor feet would be well-deserved. Warming himself a little by the ideal looking fire. Certainly a little glass of the wine would not be missed?

He tentatively set the package down and shuffled toward the arm chair. Then in a heartbeat he was sitting down, shoes off, legs stretched out towards the fire and wine goblet in hand. He sipped. Good vintage! Oak aged, fruity aftertaste.

It was so relaxing and pleasant to rest at last, he felt his damp socks being warmed by the roaring fire and life returning to his toes. He stretched them closer towards the stone fireplace and wiggled his toes in content appreciation. Fine, just 10 minutes…

Eldred smiled in bliss and reclined. Closing his eyes was the last mistake he would ever make.
